BioArt Village is a historical site unique to the city of Eindhoven. The formal name of the site is ‘Duitse Woningen’, or German Houses, a beautifully located military bunker complex build by the German army during the Second World War. It was originally erected to accommodate German military officers. The complex consists of five freestanding reinforced buildings of differing sizes disguised as a traditional farmstead in so-called Heimatstil, located on a 1,5 hectare plot of mixed forest. The site had been abandoned for some decades and after extensive renovation work, with the help of our partners, the day to open our gates was finally there.
It was a day full of inspiring talks and people, good music and delicious food. We were in luck: the weather was exceptionally pleasant for an autumn day. We kicked off the program with interactive talks particularly focused on the positioning of BioArt Laboratories and its significance for future developments, and the relevance of our new off-the-grid location in the context of sustainability. This was followed by a debate on various themes such as ethics, our sustainable future, biomaterials and circular solutions. Inbetween the talks and group discussions were exciting performances of different musicians. Amongst the attendees were renowned guest speakers such as Neelie Kroes; Bert Pauli, deputy of Economic Affairs for the province of Noord-Brabant; Monique List-de Roos, alderman of mobility, culture and design, inner city and city marketing for the city of Eindhoven; our volunteers, sponsors and partners, press, and other guests.
This day also marked the start of our Dutch Design Week exposition of 2018: Cybernetic Forest. Guests were offered an exclusive first look at the different projects of that year and had the chance to stroll around our spectacular location. De Groene Corridor made a wonderful video about the day. Watch it below:
