On Sunday, the Day of the Architects, people explored the rich history of BioArt Laboratories’ monument complex and its new repurposed function as a development institute. Constructed during the second world war, this bunker complex housed German officers from the nearby Constant Rebecque Barracks. Each bunker was made with what was available at that time, even rubble, and have walls to even 80 cm thick. Unique is its architectural style that is based on Heimitstil, a countermovement against modern architecture at the time. By mimicking local styles like the Brabant farmsteads and villa’s, the Germans tried to hide their office buildings. Yet, it’s also unique due to certain elements mixed with traditional Brabant’s style, such larger windows, broader facades, and strict formation of the buildings.
