“How can embracing the imperfections of a material redefine traditional design practices?” In ‘Crafting Imperfections of Tea Clay – Tea Clay Bloom,’ Jiwei Zhou and Miao Li respond to this by transforming industrial tea waste in China into Tea Clay, a water-based bio-material. Emphasizing the material’s natural tendency to shrink, they create unique curvatures that celebrate these imperfections, challenging the norm of molding materials into standardized forms. Their work, a synergy of human creativity and material characteristics, reimagines the potential of waste, turning it into artistic expressions that question conventional design methodologies.
