Calling Songs

Johannes Westendorp, along with Pieter Verhees and the guitar ensemble Zwerm, explores the intersection of nature and music with ‘Calling Songs’. It is a research into the possibilities of making music with the natural sounds of insects, frogs and toads, giving non-human life a voice in artistic expression. An eight-channel sound-installation was developed to match the outdoor conditions. Through a special developed sound-installation with a curved shell on top of each speaker, they create a decentralized soundscape that matches the sound quality of insectchoirs, and during the Dutch Design Week this insectchoir was shared with the public, bringing the serene yet vivid soundscape inside the exposition.
