“How can we challenge traditional mourning rituals and evoke deeper emotional connections?” Lauren Raaijmakers’ ‘Touching Death’ addresses this through an urn crafted from a biological, skin-like texture containing the DNA of the deceased. This provocative design invites closeness, touch, and potentially, abjection, offering a new perspective on commemoration and grief. Raaijmakers, a multidisciplinary Dutch artist, engages with themes of transience, suffering, and complex emotions, using symbolism to confront and entice audiences, while exploring the ethical dimensions of visual language.
