Xs-excess is a collective founded by 2 young Indian designers – Midushi Kochhar and Disharee Mathur, focused on analyzing and speculating the consequences of creating new materials made out of waste. Co-designing with cultures and ecology is at the heart of their practice. From the collective, two different projects arose. The first project is called Eggware, and the second is NewBlue.

“How can eggshells, typically discarded as waste, be transformed into sustainable ceramics?” Midushi Kochhar’s ‘Eggshell Bioceramics’ project innovatively uses eggshells, a rich source of calcium carbonate, combining them with a water-based binder and air-drying techniques to create zero-waste bioceramics. This approach not only reduces waste but also circumvents the high energy costs associated with traditional ceramic production. Kochhar, a young designer from New Delhi, focuses on material-driven design using low-value waste, advocating for more sustainable and interconnected approaches in craft and manufacturing.

NewBlue collaborates with artisans from the Jaipur Blue Pottery community, innovatively recycling sanitary ware into a material suitable for handcrafting. This unique approach not only repurposes waste but also enhances the final product, doubling its strength compared to the original. Additionally, NewBlue positively impacts the local waste economy, demonstrating a sustainable model for community-based craftsmanship.
