Milan Design Week
What’s that shit on your hands!? With 18 promising students from the Design Academy, the team of BioArt Laboratories departured on a direct flight to the Italians beating heart of design: Milan. The first phase of the cultural project ‘The Invisible Visible’ was presented at the prominent Salone del Mobile during Milan Design Week 2015.

Public laboratory to collect identities
Collaborative efforts with the young designers and in-house biological scientists merged into a public laboratory format. At this laboratory, we collected dozens of identities from international design visitors through fingerprints. This mass data would form the input for an experimental art project: What is that shit on the pattern of your fingerprint? Influencing its distinctive outlines or shape? The objective of ‘The Invisible Visible – A work of art in progress’ is to collect the ecosystems that we humans carry unconsciously with us.

Making diversity and inclusiveness visible in an artistic way
During a time span of five years, BioArt Laboratories will collect many more finger pattern types, ranging from relative sizes, providing the team of scientists with information about each individual’s ecosystem. With this, we want to make visible how the invisible cultures that we carry with us are a reflection of our cultural identity. The aim of the project is to make diversity and inclusiveness visible in an artistic way.

To each individual that visited our laboratory at Milan Design week 2015, the collected data of you and your invisible bacterial friend is highly appreciated! Stay tuned for the release of the social-cultural artwork at the end of the project phase.
