On October 18, 2024, the ceremonial opening of “The Symbiocene Forest – Coexistence” took place, marking the official start of the Dutch Design Week 2024 at BioArt Village. Central to this exhibition was the ecological and evolutionary thinking about the interconnectedness of all living beings based on the principles of the Symbiocene, and how humanity can live in harmony with nature—coexistence. Talented artists and creators showcased their works, encouraging us not only to reflect on the dominant and destructive human impact on climate, biophysical, and evolutionary processes but also to inspire us with alternative approaches. What materials and design principles are these artists and researchers already using to shape human and non-human lives in the Symbiocene? Among the many attendees were artists, designers, partners, and other curious minds from various fields connected to the intersection of nature, culture, and science.
The ceremony began with an opening speech by philosopher of technology Laurens Landeweerd and the director of BioArt Laboratories, Jalila Essaidi. During the panel discussion, we explored not only what it means to “coexist” with nature but also how to redefine the value of natural and human systems within a circular and regenerative economy. The day concluded with a celebratory reception to mark the official opening of ‘The Symbiocene Forest – Coexistence’, where all sorts of special activities takes place throughout the week of 18-27 October, ranging from exhibition, debate, live experiments to guided tours and workshops.
