Hong’s work started with questions about a territorial dispute over “the island”. This one-island question extends to all the territorial conflicts happening around the world today, but also to the question of how we treat nature.
What does it mean to own? We try to own nature through money, borders and maps in the language we have defined, but from nature’s perspective, such a language does not exist. Possession to Nature invites us to think about the meaning of our behavior towards nature today. The audience is invited to touch salt, representing nature and creating their own spaces and boundaries.
At the end of the exhibition, the artist washes it all away through the performance of water, our human trace vanishing through time and nature. It brings us to question about the meaning of our behaviors and time by the artist Jimin Hong.
