The project Rosa van Koningsbruggen did during the Talent Pressure Cooker deals with different steps of decomposition of plastic and how we can use it, in and after these steps. What is time? How to make time visible? The only thing that is certain is that it always seems that there is too little of it. With these thoughts in mind, Rosa wanted to show the process of decay with the project The Essence of Time.
In order to show the beauty of decay and how time affects everything in different ways, an object was placed in 3 different environments: a vacuum with UV-light, a humid environment with sand and bacteria, and lastly, the air we are breathing. These environments would be the representatives of earth, air, and space. For the design of the object she wanted a complex shape that would be able to erode. Therefore, the shape was made using CAD-modelling and 3D-printing. The design of the shape was inspired by fossils, for the talent the ultimate symbol of time. The relief and sharp edges are relatively easy to erode, however, the core design of the object is rather robust, so that would take much longer to degrade. This contrast resulted in a visualisation of the process, which she exhibited during the Dutch Design Week of 2016.
