Aquatecture: Rain Harvesting System

Aquatecture Compact Rain Harvesting

“We are the first generation to feel the effect of climate change and the last generation who can do something about it.”

Natural drought disaster
Shaakira Jassat is a bio-designer, graduated from the Design Academy in Eindhoven. Her upbringings in Capetown, South-Africa increased her awareness about the consequences of water shortage. She experienced extreme drought in 2017 in her hometown, – although frequently experiencing dry summers through its Mediterranean climate-. These extreme weather conditions combined with rapid urbanization and a relative high water consumption per capita led to a water crisis. This natural disaster triggered Shaakira to develop a solution to guarantee water supply, most specifically in urban environments.

Aquatecture
Aquatecture is a panel designed to harvest rain water and when integrated with technology, it can harvest moisture from the atmosphere -therefore implementable at arid and semiarid climates-. The rainwater trickles over the open punctures of the panel. The water that is collected is transported down to a collection tank and pumped back into the building’s greywater system, or stored for later use. Shaakira has reimagined a traditional practice like water harvesting, which usually requires space and doesn’t easily fit into the urban aesthetic.

Talent Pressure Cooker
While joining the Talent Pressure Cooker in 2019, Shaakira derived her inspiration from Bromeliad and Tillandsia plants which have been designed to capture water in harsh climates. Using these plants as a guide, Shaakira has started her research investigating how urban architecture could start becoming more water sensitive. We are proud to have been able to observe and guide the transformation from initial concept to a tangible water management innovation. Best wishes to former talent Shaakira Jassat for reaching the piloting phase, all the luck for the future and scaling up opportunities as a response to global climate change.
