The Bat Lamp

This project reimagines urban lighting by shifting its focus from human convenience to ecological empathy. Instead of simply illuminating public spaces, the street lamp is designed to support urban biodiversity and encourage coexistence between humans and non-human inhabitants.  In response to the loss of insect populations and the decline of urban bat habitats, the lamp emits a warm amber light directed downward to minimize light pollution and reduce disturbance to nocturnal wildlife. Integrated lavender attracts insects naturally, creating a sustainable feeding ground for bats within city parks. By combining lighting design with ecological principles, the project demonstrates how urban infrastructure can actively contribute to restoring biodiversity. It offers a small but tangible example of designing with nature rather than against it, fostering greater awareness of the ecosystems that exist alongside us.
